Peaks of the Balkans in winter

Summit of the Balkans in wintry conditions

Climbing the peaks of the Balkans in winter is almost impossible for an average or even a trained hiker. This would be an endeavour for adventurers in difficult situations. However, there are ways to make a piece of this snowy experience possible.

The main obstacle for Winter Peaks of the Balkans is the lack of accommodation in some villages. The villages most affected by winter are Doberdol, Milishevc and Babino Polje. In the other places, accommodation is either available or can be arranged.

The other obstacle is the distance. Fifteen kilometres in summer is fine, but when you add in the snow, the short daylight period and the greater likelihood of complications, these trails become too long for non-professional hikers.

The third and perhaps decisive condition is the danger of avalanches and the possibility of getting help in time. In summer, most parts of the Balkan peaks can be reached in a few hours with a better off-road vehicle or a horse. In winter, search and rescue missions have to be carried out on foot, as helicopter assistance is dependent on the support of the army.

What is possible on the peaks of the Balkans in winter?

There are many things that are possible for snowshoeing or skiing. In Kosovo, the Hajla peak is possible and beautiful. Some sections of the Liqenat - Babino Polje hike offer good conditions for a hike. If you want to see Doberdol by Maja Aruçit, you can do so if you sacrifice some enmity and walk there from Gacaferi Pastures.

In Albania, you can reach Theth and Valbona and access some of the hiking trails there and enjoy the unspoilt snow around these two villages. The Valbone Theth hike is not feasible due to the high risk of avalanches.

In Montenegro, the Plav region always offers numerous opportunities, especially in the direction of Babino Polje and some good hikes between Plav and Vusanje.

Outside the peaks of the Balkans, but still in the region

There are many other tours that offer good conditions for ski touring. The Sharr Mountains, which lie between Kosovo, North Macedonia and Albania, are perfect for winter tours. These mountains are rounder but higher, so the snow stays longer. Villages such as Brezovica, Radomira, Prevalla, Brod, Dragash and others. Click here for an offer

These tours can be organised to reach the highest peak in North Macedonia and Albania, the Korab, which is a wonderful trophy.
