EXCELLENT Based on 275 reviews Posted on emcg25Verified Incredible Peaks of the Balkans Trek An incredible place and experience- Donika and Alb led my group in the Peaks of the Balkans loop, and I could not be more grateful that I got to trek in a beautiful region with two guides whose love for the nature and their culture made the trip even more special.Posted on Dardan LVerified Amazing experience hiking peaks of balkans with friends coming from New York, London, Paris, Lebanon, Cyprus and Romania Booked a 5 day hike + via ferata with Balkan Natural Adventure for a group of 10 in July. The entire journey from organizing and thinking through it with Nol and Anila, to airport pick up, and to hikes, to transfers between hikes and all the way to customized drop off wherever each of us wanted was amazing. We were a diverse group of friends with people coming from New York, London, Paris, Lebanon, Cyprus, and Romania. Yet, the team was on top of everything, quick to respond, and extremely accommodating. Our tour guide, Vale, was also super great. She was super friendly and very accommodating to a lot of changes throughout the trip. The peaks of the balkans is of course breathtaking. The photos speak for itself. And changing countries all on foot is such a unique experience. Highly recommend Peaks of the Balkans and of course there is no tour agency like Balkan Natural Adventure.Posted on lynnmbkVerified Spectacular hike, guide, views, and food The hike was amazing, spectacular views, food in the B&Bs, and genuine people around. The guide, Vale, was fantastic. It took us some time to get used to the challenging level but the landscape was worthwhile. Didn’t expect to see Swiss-like views (and better as much more diverse) in the Balkans.Posted on Kirsten KVerified Peaks of the Balkans - Open Group Tour I recently joined the open group organised by the Kosovar tour operator ”Balkan Natural Adventure“ to hike the most beautiful sections of the Peaks of the Balkans Trek. I choose BNA for this tour as their ticked off my most important considerations: 1. Only 9 days of hiking - So far I had only hiked 4 days in a row. The original Trek is hiked within 12 days , but that felt too long for me and the available vacation days I wanted to take. 2. Route adaption - the PoB was established already more than 10 years ago. Parts of the route, especially in rural areas of Kosovo, have been under development since and are not the natural trails anymore they used to be. The local guides working with BNA therefore adapted the route to offer the hikers the nature experience they are looking for. 3. Price - Even though the first two points where the most important to me, I have to list this point as well, as BNA where partly only half as expensive as other tour operators. The hike itself was wonderful; The mountain landscape magnificent. The group was international and mixed amongst all ages. We were in total 11 hikers and we were accompanied by two mountain guides. Our head guide Mentor is a very experienced guide who knows these mountains by heart and who is part of the team maintaining the routes. He speaks excellent English (as well as Italian) and was able to answer all our questions regarding Landscape or History of this beautiful and historically interesting part of Europe. Being a solo hiker in familiar mountains, I was a bit worried prior to the hike, whether I like being part of such a big group. But the people in my group as well as the guides were awesome and I had a fantastic time. After all, we all had one shared love - the love for the mountains. Thank you BNA.Posted on Ilka BVerified Peaks of the Balkans - unvergesslich und horizonterweiternd Zusammen mit einer Freundin habe ich im September die geführte 9/10-Tage Tour Peaks of the Balkan gemacht. Posted on paul gVerified Peaks of the Balkans Trail - self guided, We booked our self guided Peaks of the Balkans holiday via BNA. To be clear this is not the full trail but selected pieces of it with some transfers so there are plusses and minuses when considered against the full trail. We couldn't fault the organisation of accommodation and transfers through the trip, everyone was expecting us and some even asked for our reference number. Our contact was super responsive to email questions and asked for information well in advance of it being needed so there were no last minute hiccups. She also gave good advice on getting back to Tirana at the end of the trip so we would not be in a rush for our plane home. There was a nervous moment at the end of the last day when a number of different people offered their 'taxi' to us but eventually someone showed us our name on their phone so we hopped in with him! As the title suggests, there are some peaks on this hike so don't go expecting lots of flat days. The trails are well marked and the GPX files provided when overlaid on our mapping app were very accurate. We lost count of the number of times we criss-crossed borders between Albania-Kosovo-Montenegro but BNA had provided us with all the necessary paperwork in case we were asked for it. (We did hear that a walker had been charged €10 by some men who were allegedly a border patrol to check their passports but have nothing to confirm if this was actually what happened). Weather was good but you are above 2000m on occasions so it can change quickly so pack a waterproof and windproof. Apparently the streams are drinkable but there are quite a lot of animals around so maybe filter it first. Food at guesthouses was good but not spectacular and build your own packed lunch was generally excellent local cheeses and tomatoes with bread - not many shops around so take whatever snacks you want with you for that post lunch energy boost! Overall a great trip and thoroughly recommended. Scenery is amazing and, yes, you will see the odd bunker or two :-)Posted on Sarah PVerified What an Adventure! I can't say enough about Balkan Natural Adventure and their guides! I just came back from the Peaks of the Balkans, Ten Days, Three Countries Tour. It was an incredible, intense trip with so many incredible views! A big call out to Balkan Natural Adventure for organizing such an incredible tour as well as our wonderful guides Mentor and Albi for making everything go smoothly. I was blown away by the hikes and views and would recommend this route to anyone seeking an adventure!Posted on IndiaVerified All round excellence! The Peaks of the Balkans exceeded all expectations. In part for the scenery, and in part due to our phenomenal guide Vali and the wonderful group we had. I could not recommend highly enough.Posted on William LVerified Peaks of the Balkans Had an incredible 10 days' hiking the Peaks of the Balkans, great walking, wonderful people and incredible views - memories to last a lifetime! Our guides Gëzim, Albi and Buron looked after us all the way and expertly navigated all the bumps in the road, literally and metaphorically! They were friendly, approachable, and really to good to chat with! Food and board were good - some more basic than others, but comfortable and tasty. BNA were communicative, responsive, accommodating and helpful; what more could you ask for? The small group sizes were perfect - we left having made friends with our fellow hikers! Could not recommend this hike, or BNA more!Posted on Ann RVerified Brilliant felt very confident in BNA through out trip. As elderly lone female traveller I felt very well cared for doing Peak of the Balkans as a self guided walker. They were very efficient & professional from booking right thru to completion of my trip. Eli who I dealt with in the office tailored the trip to my exact requirements. All transfers including luggage transfers completed seamlessly & to time. Only one hiccup luggage rather wet on one occasion due to heavy rain. From my experience I would highly recommend this company. I
Peaks of the Balkans 7 DAY TOUR - SELF-GUIDED
Embark on a 7-day self-guided Peaks of the Balkans tour through Albania, Kosovo & Montenegro. Walking times are usually between 5 and 8 hours per day. The daily ascents are usually around 900 to 1,000 metres in altitude, occasionally 1,100 to 1,300 metres.
▼ Day 1: Arrival in the region
Arrival in Shkoder and overnight stay in hotel. Podgorica airport (1 hour 30 minutes from the starting point), Tirana airport (1 hour 30 minutes from the starting point). Transfer from the airport and back can be provided on request.

▼ Day 2: The famous hike over the Valbona Pass
Length of the hike: 19.5 km
Metres of ascent ↑: 1068 m
Altitude metres descent ↓: 850 m
Your first day on the Balkan peaks begins with a transfer from Shkodra to the village of Nderlyse, a small hamlet at the foot of the Balkan peaks. The village is home to the Shala River, which has created waterfalls and rock formations similar to baths and pools.
On this first hike, you will get a real taste of the Cursed Mountains and the peaks of the Balkans Trail. You can expect a varied hike with mountain villages and picturesque views. You will hike across high meadows, forests, rocky terrain and peaks and see the southernmost glacier in the northern hemisphere.

Cultural note: Valbona is a predominantly Muslim valley with some Catholics who have migrated from Theth. There is a legend that the village was founded by an orphan who had moved there from Vuthaj/ Vusanje, in today's Montenegro.
▼ Day 3: Hike over the Persllopit Pass to the summer village of Cerem
Length of the hike: 14.9 km
Metres of ascent ↑: 1200 m
Altitude metres descent ↓: 950 m
Today's hike takes you to the Montenegrin border and the country's highest peak, Kollata e Keqe. If the weather is good, the summit can be included in the itinerary, otherwise you are welcome to choose an easier route. We have adapted this variant from the classic peaks of the Balkans to avoid the gravelly, dusty gravel road to Cerem. From the highest point of the hike, you can see the mountain ranges stretching into all three countries.
Cultural note: Cerem is a small village, largely abandoned, and at the moment is only inhabited by shepherds during the summer season. In winter, the village is empty due to the poor conditions and the road connecting the village to Valbone is blocked by snow.
▼ Day 4: The remote village of Doberdol below the border triangle
Length of the hike: 15.5 km
Ascent altitude metres: 1030 m
Altitude metres descent: 440 m
After two days of mixed hikes in different environments, this route is dominated by greenery. The entire hike to Doberdol will familiarise you with the rich flora of the region that fills the mountain meadows. The villagers along the way will offer you homemade food, drinks and refreshments.
Two temporary cafés under a canopy of trees give this part of the trail a unique charm. The landscape will also be filled with sheep, goats, cows and horses that support the local economy. Along the way, you will pass some of the oldest forests in the world.
Cultural note: The Gashi Valley begins in this region. The forests have been under UNESCO protection since 2017 as part of the primeval beech forests of the Carpathians. The forests are also part of the original ancient beech forests of Germany, which now extend across 12 countries.
▼ Day 5: From Doberdol to the highest point in Kosovo
Length of the hike: 18 km
Metres in altitude ↑: 915 m
Metres in altitude ↓: 915 m
Today you can climb the highest peak in Kosovo, Gjeravica, or optionally choose an alternative route.
The hike leads along lakes, small streams and ridges with unobstructed views of the mountains. The special feature of this part of the hike are the glacial lakes where the Triton salamander lives, whose existence clearly confirms the purity of the water.
Cultural note: During the communist regime in this part of the world, the border between Albania and Yugoslavia was one of the most protected borders in the world.
▼ Day 6: The loop closes, hike back to Theth
Length of the hike: 16 km
Metres in altitude ↑: 1110 m
Metres in altitude ↓: 1440 m
After a transfer to Vusanje (MNE) or Vuthaj (AL), the 16 km hike back to the historic Albanian village of Theth begins. The trail leads along the steepest part of the Cursed Mountains or Prokletije/ Albanian Alps, which were a forbidden zone during the communist era. In addition to the dramatic cliffs and rocks that form the backdrop to the day's hike, you will also see an old military bunker and disused border signs.

The hike leads past Lake Ropojane, which marks the border between the two countries. This hike is the rockiest of the entire trip. However, it also offers some wide mountain meadows and beautiful valley views. The descent into the valley will eventually lead us to Theth, where I will complete our loop. After a short break, a transfer will take you back to your hotel in Shkodra for a farewell dinner with lots of great memories. (Overnight stay included)
▼ Day 7: Shkoder - Departure
If time allows, you can use today to explore the highlights of Shkder. Stroll along Rruga Kole Idromeno in the Italian-style city centre or head up to Rozafa Castle. The nearby Lake Skutari is also well worth a visit.

Food & Water
The food in this part of the world will be something you will eagerly anticipate at the end of each day. The dishes are freshly prepared in the traditional way and are characterised by a mixture of Balkan, Turkish and European influences. Guest houses serve home-made bread with locally grown vegetables, dairy products and eggs. Dinner includes traditional soups, meat dishes, vegetables and cakes. The guesthouses also prepare a packed lunch for you every day - often consisting of a sandwich with cheese, fruit or vegetables.
Many dishes are vegetarian by default, and meat is usually served separately as a side dish. For vegan, lactose-free and gluten-free diets, please let us know.
Bring your own water bottle to fill up for the hike. You can get water from mountain streams or tap water in guesthouses, both of which are of drinking water quality. If you are worried about drinking untreated water, we recommend taking water purification tablets with you.
Accommodation
During the trek, you will spend the night in simple lodge-style guesthouses with functional bathroom facilities. All our Packages include private room in all hotels and guest houses. For 2 people this means double rooms, for larger groups it can also be rooms with 3 or 4 beds or maisonette rooms/bungalows in individual locations. During the hike, you will mainly stay in small family-run guesthouses and mountain huts.
Bed linen and blankets, towels, shampoo and other basic items are provided by the guest houses. However, we recommend packing a travelling towel and a hut sleeping bag just in case. It can be very chilly in the mountain village of Doberdol.
Terrain during the hikes, navigation
This hiking trail is characterised by many descents and ascents. The route leads over a relief that represents alpine terrain with steep slopes, river valleys carved into the mountain, rocky peaks, mountain pine belts etc. However, the paths chosen are mostly easy to walk on and safe.
For navigation you will receive either GPS files that can be downloaded to your own navigation device or alternatively links to routes stored in our app (these can be viewed offline after downloading, you do not need an internet connection in the mountains, only the GPS of your mobile phone must be active).
